Leigha Lennox Interview

Leigha Lennox

Who inspired you to become a writer?

My love of reading and writing began early in life – around ten or eleven years old – when I would read Nancy Drew books. At one point my parents gave me a typewriter for Christmas and I would type short stories on it.

My senior year of high school I had an amazing teacher, Mrs. McGuire, who pushed me to write every day and always complimented me on the short stories I would write. From there, the love of writing never left me.

Besides the Blue Mountain Beach books, what other books have you written?

I started writing my first novel, Burn Out, in 2005. I became obsessed with the Natalee Holloway story, and couldn’t stop watching the news report. I began to wonder how someone just disappeared without a trace. I wrote off and on for about five years before I finished Burn Out, and self-published (this is when the self-pubbing became all the rage). That became the beginning of the Rachel Scott series. Within a month of putting it on Amazon Kindle’s publishing platform, it hit a bunch of bestseller lists. By the time summer rolled around I was getting emails and calls from publishers and agents wanting to represent me. I signed with Thomas & Mercer, one of Amazon’s publishing houses, for a four-book deal for the Rachel Scott books. Asylum Harbor, Cut & Run, and Deceptive Measures followed.

After having a big success with the mystery series I decided to try my hand at writing romance, which is another genre I love to read. Then came the decision on whether to use my real name to publish the romances or invent a pen name. There are several authors who use different pen names to separate genres they write. Nora Roberts and Stephen King to name a couple. So, I did the same and Leigha Lennox was a born! I now write all my romance books under that pen name.

How long did it take you to complete your first book?

About 5 years. When I was put on bed rest while pregnant with my second child, I started writing the Rachel Scott series. I toyed with that series for five years until I got serious about finishing the book and hitting the “publish” button!

What is your current work in progress?

I go back and forth between writing romance and mystery. I am working on a new mystery series with a brand new cast of characters! I am hoping to publish the first book in the series by January 2016.

I also wrote three novellas – romantic comedy genre – a couple years ago. I have since pulled them from Amazon and decided to make them into full -length novels. They will be re-published around the holiday season.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

I have so many as my influences have changed over the years. When I was a child I devoured every Nancy Drew book, and I loved, loved, loved Judy Blume.

These days my favorite writers are more varied. I’m a big fan of Sophie Kinsella, Stephen King, Nora Roberts, John Grisham, James Patterson, and Carl Hiaasen.

love unspoken

“If I had come home sooner, would I have had a chance?” he asks, sinking down in the bed until we’re eye to eye. He knows he’s making it impossible for me to skirt around the truth.
Eyes don’t easily lie to eyes.
“Yes,” I whisper. “I waited for you. Until New York, it would have been you.”
His fingers come up, gently brushing a piece of hair from my forehead. “I really fucked up with you, didn’t I?”
“Neither of us was in the right place. It wasn’t our time.”
He moves closer, brushing his thumb against my cheek. My conscience whispers but the tequila screams. “When will it be our time?”
I think about Pierce. This weekend. Everything. “It may never come, or maybe, it’s already passed.”
“I’m going to fight for you,” he declares, propping himself up on his elbow to look down at me. “I thought I could let you go if I knew it would make you happy, but after sitting alone in this apartment all weekend while you were with him, I don’t think I can do that.”
I swallow hard. “And, if you don’t win?”
“I’ve already lost, so what do I have left to lose?”
And, he’s right. He’s already lost so much that the risk is minimal.
“Pierce trusts me,” I blurt, my palms sweating against the sheets.
He leans in, kissing my cheek. “He shouldn’t trust me, not when he has the one thing I want.”
“Blake?”
He slips out of my bed without looking back, carefully closing the bedroom door behind him. He wanted the last word, and he got it.

Excerpt #2love unspoken banner

My eyes scan the room, full of well-dressed men, many with beautiful women on their arms. A few of them look lost like me, but most own the room like professional socialites. This could never be my whole life, I think to myself.
And, as I continue scanning, I see him.
He’s here. The man who stole my soul is standing across the room with his back against the wall. My eyes are locked on him, but his eyes dance around the room like I’m not here. Maybe to him, I never was. Maybe he’s looking for the next one—the girl he’ll show the world to then disappear.
I look beside me—at Pierce—and I feel sick that any part of me even wants to go across the room. I feel sick because there’s a man here who I know could make me happy—who does make me happy—and yet I’m willing to throw it all away. He looks away from Royce, eyes instantly finding mine. He smiles, and I return it the best I can because for just a few more minutes, I need him to think that nothing has changed. And, maybe nothing has.
“I’m going to find the restroom,” I whisper to Pierce.
“I’ll come with you.”
Shaking my head, I say, “No, you stay. I’ll be right back.”
He nods, hesitantly, and I wait for him to turn his attention back to Royce before blazing a path through the crowd, anxious to prove to myself that this isn’t a dream.
The shield cracks.
My heart races.
His eyes still roam, taking in everything … everything but me.
I’m not going to let him out of my sight … I’m not going to let him hide from the anguish he’s buried me in the last several months. He has nowhere to run. Even if he did, I wouldn’t let him, not this time.
A few long strides and I’m standing in front of him, staring into those familiar pained eyes. When you love someone, it’s impossible to look at them and feel hate. You may want to feel it. You may think you feel it, but love and hate can’t co-exist. I hate that I love him, but I can’t hate him.
And, I want to hate him. It would make it easier to love someone like Pierce who deserves my heart. This man stole it months ago, and I don’t think he has any intention of returning it. Sometimes I don’t know if I want it back.
But then, I think of the last few days—few months actually—and I realize another man may be winning it back for me. Maybe it’s not gone forever but simply misplaced.
His hair is a little longer, but he’s the same. The way he stands … the way his fingers curl around a beer bottle. He’s exactly the same.
“Blake,” I whisper, afraid of what he’ll say, what he’ll do. Still afraid he’ll find a way to run away, and I won’t be able to catch him.
He stares at me like he’s never even met me, or maybe he’s spent the last several months trying to forget me. I can’t say I haven’t tried to do the same. There’s not enough alcohol in the world do erase him.
“Does he make you happy?” he finally asks, practically staring through me. He sounds so broken, so sad.
“Who?” I ask, caught off guard by his question.
“Pierce. Does he make you happy?”
My eyes well with tears I’ve left unshed … tears I left for him to see. “Yes,” I whisper, doing my best to hold them in. He deserves to watch every single one of them run down my cheek but not here … not now.
He nods, reaching his fingers up toward my cheek before quickly pulling them back away. And just as quickly as he came back into my life, he’s gone.
It’s really over.
If any part of him wanted me, he would have fought for me.

excerpt reveal love unspoken

EXCERPT

I finally walk in the office two minutes after eight. I’m late for the first time in six months, and I don’t even care. Sometimes when life weighs you down, you simply stop caring.
The elevator opens to my floor, and I step out in somewhat of a trance—a mix of tired, hung-over, and confused. Monday feels like Friday, and that’s never a good sign.
A strong arm wraps around me from behind, pulling me back into a dark room. I’m ready to fight back, but his familiar scent tickles my nose, and I relax.
“You’re late.” His breath hits the back of my neck.
“I overslept. It won’t happen again.”
His fingers curl against the fabric of my navy blue shift dress. “Does your new perfume have a hint of tequila in it?” he asks.
“You don’t like it?” I ask, hiding from the truth.
“Don’t fuck with me, Ms. Fields. Who did you drink with last night because it wasn’t me?”
“Why do you have to be so smart?”
“Lila.”
I close my eyes tightly, praying for forgiveness in advance. “I may have had a few shots last night before bed.”
He spins me around in his arms, and it’s only then that I realize he pulled us into a small conference room. He has me pressed against the wall, his arms framing my face. “I’ve never known a person to do shots alone.”
Even with only the dim light showing through the partially open door, I can see his eyes. “I wasn’t alone.”
He pushes against the door until it closes then frames me in again. There’s nowhere to run. No lies to tell. “I don’t want him there alone with you. Just thinking about it is making me sick.”
I swallow my regret. I can’t do anything about what’s already been done.
“Move in with me,” he says, his lips a whisper above mine. I answer the only way I can, standing on my tiptoes to press my lips on his. I want him to forget just as much as I need to stop thinking.
He grips the back of my neck, deepening the kiss by pressing his tongue between my lips. I’m lost in him—swept away by the waves he creates from head to toe. I splay my hands on his stomach, feeling his taut muscles through his crisp dress shirt. I slide them up until my fingers meet behind his neck, curling into his hair.
“I’m not a jealous man,” he breathes as his mouth trails a path down my throat.
“Okay,” I say softly, my body aching for his.
“But you make me jealous.”
I wrap my arms tightly around his neck. “I love you,” I whisper into his ear.
He groans, lifting me until my legs are wrapped around his hips. My dress is short … it wouldn’t take much.
The door clicks, but his lips stay on me. I open my mouth, but the light comes on, warning him before I can. He looks up but doesn’t move to put me down. My cheeks burn red when I see who’s standing there.
“Sorry, Mr. Stanley,” Jane, the receptionist says, her own face turning a deep shade of red. “You asked me to bring Mr. Stone in here. I didn’t-”
“It’s okay, Jane. I’ve got it from here,” Pierce interrupts. She wastes no time before disappearing around the corner. Not that I blame her.
My face only burns hotter when I see Blake standing where she’d been. He’s not looking at Pierce … just me. The color drains from his face as he steps back, lowering his wounded eyes. I don’t want to watch, but I also can’t look away.
My chest tightens as I loosen my grip on Pierce and fight to stand on my own two feet again. He lets me, but his body is still flush with mine.
“Let me go,” I say, trying my best to make it so Blake doesn’t hear.
He does, slowly, adjusting my skirt along the way. “Now he knows,” he whispers against my ear before pulling away.
My eyes widen as I watch him take a seat at the conference room table. He looks back at me before turning his attention to Blake. There’s nothing I’d like to do more than disappear from this room, but I fear for each of their safety if I do.
“Are you going to come sit down, Blake, or are we holding this meeting in the hallway?” Pierce asks, leaning back in his chair. For a second, he reminds me of Wade; I hate comparing the two.
I glance over at Blake. He’s pondering, hands fisted at his side, eyes narrowed in on the man I was entangled with just minutes ago. A still frame of it could definitely go next to uncomfortable in the dictionary. “Did you call me here for a meeting, Stanley, or did you call me here to prove that you have bigger balls?”
Pierce has a smug look on his face, but as he looks over at me, his expression softens instantly. If he thought this was going to be okay—that I was somehow going to not see through him—he was wrong. He didn’t just hurt Blake; he hurt me.
His eyes shift back to Blake. “A meeting, of course. We just lost track of time.”
Blake steps into the room, walking right past me to the side the table opposite Pierce. I watch—panicked—as he leans over the table. “I swear to God … if you are using her to get back at me, I will fucking kill you. She’s not a prize. She’s not a way to punish me, and so help me God, if you hurt her-”
Pierce stands swiftly, leaning in until their faces are only about a foot apart. “I would never hurt her because I love her. Do you know what love is because I seriously doubt it.” My heart races, and I have no idea what to do to make this all stop. “And while we’re having our man to man, I’m going to warn you once to stay the fuck away from her outside of work. I was the one who picked up the pieces you left behind, and I’m not going to sit here and let you hurt her again.”
“I was protecting her,” Blake says through gritted teeth.
Pierce tilts his head, the look on his face absolutely murderous. “I forgot how good you are at protecting women.”

US Special Forces, Staff Sergeant
Ethan Stone, lives by one mantra “fight or die”.

The army is his life, his men are his family. So
when an injury sends him home from Afghanistan, the nightmares of what he’s
witnessed, can no longer be kept at bay. The alcohol he drowns himself in every
night only sinks him further into depression’s abyss.

Waking after one of his benders, Stone is greeted
by a tiny, knife wielding firecracker and one destroyed bar.
Saddles, was meant to be her escape. A new start
away from an abusive relationship and a way to fulfill her daddy’s dying wish.
But all the bar has brought Shannon is debt collectors and pushy buyers
threatening to destroy her. And to top all that off one drunken, gorgeous idiot.

The last thing she needed was a handsome, angry
ex-soldier to distract her.

All he wanted, was to pay for the damages. But
when she refuses there is only one thing he can do. But when a familiar face
from his past changes everything, can they learn to work together?

Will they find salvation in each other’s arms?

She turns over in bed and I look at her,
expecting to see regret in her eyes. Instead, I see understanding. This woman,
this . . . angel, has come to me in my greatest time of need. I swallow past a
sudden lump in my throat, too overcome with emotion to speak. She doesn’t say
anything but leans over to kiss my cheek. I turn my head at the last second,
capturing her lips with my own. This kiss is different, though; it’s softer,
gentler. I nibble lightly on her bottom lip and feel her smile. Her hand travels
down my chest to the waistband of my jeans but instead of pulling them off like
I expect, her hand disappears beneath my shirt. I tense, not ready for her to
see that vulnerable side of me. I’m too scarred; she’s going to take one look
at my body and run. I grab her hand and pull it out of my shirt, but she’s felt
them. The scars. I can see the horror on her face. She’s going to leave. I
brace myself for the rejection I know is coming… But it doesn’t. I flinch as
she pushes my shirt up, exposing my scars to her gaze. The light from the lamp
casts our shadows on the wall, and I choose to look at that rather than the
horror on her face. She’s silent. Too silent. What the hell is she thinking? I
risk a glance, and my heart almost stops beating from what I see. Tears. She’s
fucking crying. For me. “I’m sorry,” she cries, wiping away her tears. I want
to fucking laugh. She’s crying for me, and apologizing for doing it. “Don’t.” I
smile, leaning up and capturing her hand in my own. I press my lips against it,
tasting the slightly salty tang of her tears on her fingers. “Why are you
crying?” “Look at what they did to you,” she whispers through her tears. “Keets
told me you were captured, but he never told me this.” Keets told her? I should
be angry, but I guess a part of me is glad she knew. It would explain why she
didn’t run the second she saw the scars. “Will you tell me?” she asks, but I
shake my head. I can’t do it. She’s opened a part of my heart tonight that I
thought would lie dormant forever. But this, this past that I come from, this
weight that I carry . . . it’s mine. I can’t burden her with it. She
understands. I don’t even have to say anything. I swallow past another lump in
my throat as she kisses the long, jagged scar on my ribs. I have a tattoo there,
covering the worst of it. I’m covered in tattoos, actually, most of them on my
chest and arms. All designed to hide the imperfect body that lies beneath them.
But she makes it bearable. Her kiss is soft, fleeting. Not enough, though.
Never enough. This time, when she tries to take my shirt off, I let her. This
time, we make love. It’s gentle, slower. I want to show her the same kindness
she’s shown me. She takes me to heights far beyond my fear and insecurities.
This time, I make love to her as Ethan, the man . . . not Stone, the injured
soldier.

COVER REVEAL
SYNOPSIS:

I’m Sawyer James, best-selling indie author.  There have been so many rumors going around about my model, Caleb Allen, and I that I can’t see straight.  So, instead of sitting back on my hands like I’m told I need to do, let it blow over, and kill everyone with kindness, I’m going to do what I do best, I’m going to write a book about our relationship.
So here it is, our story.  The real story.
Now if you have anything to talk about, you can shove it because this is the truth.
This is the story from behind the computer.

I am a mommy of two, wife to an amazing man, and full-time employee. Life is crazy and busy! I started writing again during a darker time in my life in a group write in a Facebook group. They brought back my passion for writing that I haven’t felt since high school and helped me through hard times.

Starting this process was tedious and nerve-wracking, but my amazing ladies and my fabulous husband have inspired me to take my love for writing to the next step.

My current books are Have I Told You, I Won’t Give Up on You, A Very Merry Black Hollywood Christmas, and Give Me All of You, all part of the Black Hollywood Series.

Behind the Computer is a new standalone that is not part of the BH series.  It’s a step outside of my comfort zone, but the story hit me like a ton of bricks so I went with it.

The world had turned to waste; immortality was never meant for man and it drove humanity to the edge of destruction. There had been plenty of stories about how the human race would end. Unlike the movies from Hollywood, there was no big bang like a sun exploding; there was no catastrophic moment where our world was flipped upside down like in a nuclear war or zombie virus outbreak. It was gradual, like a seeping virus that withered everything within its path until it ground us down into brittle, hollowed cores. It wasn’t out to destroy our bodies; it destroyed everything we once treasured. Hope, love, compassion, joy… even our mortality. It was all gone. And now it mocked us with a peace we could never achieve, death.

BFN-Excerpt

“Angel?” Ethan’s low, husky tones startled me.

He stood in the doorway wearing nothing but a pair of low-slung, faded jeans, the sight of him inciting my taste buds to drool desirously, like chocolate melting on my tongue.

“Come here,” he instructed.

Obeying instantly, I unfurled my legs and moved across the room toward him. He gazed at me, his expression still inscrutable, and then slowly he moved around to my back.

“Close your eyes.”

Again, I complied without hesitation. I felt something soft brush gently against my eyelids, a smooth, silky fabric blocking out all remaining light as it tightened against my skin. He was blindfolding me.

My heart struck my chest wall with a sudden instinctive foretaste of what was to come. The blindfold, his insistence that I wear my red shoes, his near-naked form in the doorway, suggested only one thing. But his talk of my needing to learn a lesson, his tone, and impenetrable mood hinted at something different. Nonetheless, my skin prickled with eager expectation as I waited for my next instruction in the darkness behind my eyelids.

Suddenly, his voice startled me. He was closer than I’d imagined, his breath warm against my ear, his smell … exquisite. “How does that make you feel?”

Misreading the question, I nodded to let him know I was okay.

“No, Angel. Tell me how it makes you feel.” His voice was slightly harsher than before, more demanding.

I thought about what he wanted me to say, trying to tune in to the sensations I was feeling, but struggling. “Restricted,” I said finally.

“Anything else?” He’d shifted, his lips grazing the lobe of my other ear now.

“Dependent.”

“Think beyond the blindfold.”

My mind searched for the answer, and then after a beat I whispered, “Aware. I feel more aware.”

“Of what?”

“You.”

“What is it about me you’re more aware of?”

“How close you are … Your scent.”

“My scent? And what does it smell like?”

Hesitating, I scrambled for words to try and describe it, eventually arriving at, “You.”

I felt him smile briefly against my cheek and then he was gone.
